Bendigo Law Courts
Bendigo’s future law court will transform the delivery of justice in Bendigo and Loddon Mallee, an area extending from Kyneton to Mildura throughout the north-west of Victoria.
The culture and knowledge of the Dja Dja Wurrung (Traditional Owners) is reflected in the court and its surrounds, making the future court a statement of reconciliation and signalling a new era.
The city of Bendigo boasts many fine civic buildings. The steeples and clock towers form a silhouette across the sky. The copper clad building will sit above the surrounding built form, joining the silhouette.
In recent years Bendigo has seen renewed investment in response to the changing needs of this community. The new Bendigo Law Court is proximate to the recently refurbished library, the new GovHub, and the redeveloped TAFE campus.
A human centred design approach has been adopted, recognising that attending court can be a stressful experience. The building is legible upon approach. The entries are clearly expressed, and the entry sequence is configured for intuitive way finding.
The materials palette is soft and calming and filled with natural daylight. Natural materials are employed for their biophilic effect.
The character of each courtroom differs slightly, yet each is invested with an appropriate degree of gravitas. All courtrooms are digitally enabled, ensuring those working in court can make the best use of technology.
