On Top of the World

On Top of the World invites local and visiting artists, designers and thinkers to contribute to contemporary debates through an informal series of talks and flags on the top floor of our Rokeby Street studio.

When Wardle purchased the building at 25 Rokeby St, Collingwood in 2012 it came with a flagpole. An unusual but ultimately an inspiring fixture that seeded an irregular series of talks curated by Wardle and foundational tenant and vexillophile (flag enthusiast) Stewart Russell from print workshop Spacecraft.

Guest speakers collaborate with Spacecraft Studio – a print workshop once situated on the ground floor of 25 Rokeby Street, to design and create a flag to be raised on the evening and flown atop our building.

The brief is always loose, the flag design is something that reflects the artist’s work or an issue important to their current practice. Most participants are hands on creating the flag with Stewart in his workshop. The individual designs are hoisted and then discussed informally.

The evenings are a way of bringing together like, bright minds to learn from each other’s disciplines and take a moment to appreciate different perspectives in art through the medium of a single flag.

Since its inception in 2013, the evenings have brought many talented creatives through our doors, including locals Patricia Piccinini & Peter Hennessey, Rosslynd Piggott, Gareth Sansom, Natasha Johns-Messenger, Eugenia Lim, Max Delany and The Huxleys to name a few. International creatives such as Roderick Buchanan, Erieta Attali and Alessio Antoniolli have also dropped in to share their stories with us.

We’re often delighted and occasionally provoked by individual approaches to the brief, including a performative aspect to the evening by Phillip Adams of BalletLab. Every attendee participated in the event by passing the flag along a human chain to reach its final destination – the flagpole.
