The 2020 Gold Medal

John Wardle is the proud recipient of the Australian Institute of Architects’ highest honour.⠀

Awarded since 1960, the Gold Medal recognises distinguished service by architects who have designed or executed buildings of high merit, producing work of great distinction that has advanced architecture or endowed the profession in a distinguished manner.

Founding Wardle (formerly John Wardle Architects) in 1986, John has produced a diverse body of award-winning work over more than three decades. Early commissions from institutional clients were instrumental in the practice’s development, consolidating John’s reputation and importantly establishing an approach that foregrounded functional buildings that delight the senses.

Over this time, John has refined a design process with long-time Wardle collaborators and fellow Principals. Projects range from domestic dwellings, educational settings such as laboratories and research hubs to commercial towers and civic contributions. An enduring theme through these projects is the ability to deliver highly innovative projects that celebrate individual craft.

The work of Wardle has been celebrated in the publication of three monographs: Volume – John Wardle Architects, published by Thames & Hudson in 2008, This Building Likes Me, published by Thames & Hudson in 2016 and most recently Somewhere Other published by Uro Publications to coincide with the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale.
