River’s Edge is a new learning, teaching and research building located at the edge of the North Esk river amongst the historic Launceston Railway Workshops at the Inveresk Precinct. River’s Edge offers contemporary learning environments and communities of workplace that will provide a setting for meaningful exchange between students and university staff.

Mediating the end of Traverser Lane and the off-grid Architecture School, the building presents a leading edge to the precinct. This edge is enlivened with large windows addressing Traverser Lane and a new University Square which serve as navigational markers that put learning on display and support wayfinding through the site.

From its leading edge, the building then expands – from point to panorama as it embraces the view of the North Esk. Along its length, the sawtooth geometry of the surrounding mid-century industrial roofscape has been flipped on its side providing inhabitation, human-scale and controlled views toward the river.

Upon entry, the ground floor is organised around a series of brick-pods, located at the edges of a lively central atrium. These pods house a range of collaborative teaching and student support programs, while the spaces between them frame viewing portals out to the surrounding context. Above, large timber lightwells hover. Referencing the brick geometry below, they direct the view upward to inspire a moment of awe and delight.

River’s Edge celebrates its position within a post-industrial site with references to clear structural expression and robust materials. The building adapts and optimises industrial vocabulary for enhanced solar orientation and thermal performance, while thinking beyond the building to target embodied carbon reductions in construction, operation, and end-of-life impact.
