Set close to the Yangtze River in urban Wuhan, this dramatic collection of villas was designed to appear as though cloth had been draped over stone. One of the design challenges our team undertook was to design fourteen individual villas across seven buildings, it was necessary for each villa to look individual.

To achieve this, materials and colour selections were carefully managed to be complimentary yet distinct. Two colour themes and their varying tones and highlights assist in creating a different character for each villa. This is achieved by using one type of stone for each building, and accents of varying shades.

The graceful silhouettes of the villas feature winged rooflines, views out to the river or into landscaped courtyards. The design is conscious of allowing unobstructed views out and equally fastidious about obscuring views into each villa. To facilitate these conditions a gradient system of perforated mesh in varying patterns is used, to allow vision, to obstruct vision and one to mediate the two states.
