The Kongwak Butter Factory establishes a destination precinct with plans including a new general store, restaurant, art gallery, and event space. The broader site will include a market garden to support the restaurant and boutique accommodation. The restoration and expansion of activities will pay tribute to the town’s history, and showcase local produce, arts and culture.

Set in Victoria’s Southern Gippsland region, The Kongwak Butter Factory has a rich history that has laid dormant for many years. The heritage buildings and surrounding former agricultural land are to undergo regeneration; the imperative here is to celebrate the location as much as the buildings.

  • Site Area 16 hectares

The design across the sixteen-hectare site includes accommodation, restoration of the Butter and Cheese factories and a bridge over one of the creeks on site. The scheme also embraces the opportunity to revegetate the area with wetlands and parklands. Careful siting of all accommodation buildings within the landscape and oversight of the masterplan has been essential to realising this stage of the project.

The Kongwak Butter Factory redevelopment unlocks a multitude of opportunities for employment, tourism and revival of local production in the area. The ambition is for the heritage to be preserved and to create a world class destination while balancing the demands of community and culture of place.
